Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
Cognitive behavioral therapy stresses the role of thinking and how you feel and what you do. It is based on the belief that thoughts, rather than people or events, cause negative feelings. The Therapist assists the client in identifying, testing the reality of, and correcting dysfunctional beliefs underlying his or her thinking. The therapist then helps the client modify those thoughts and the behaviors that flow from them. CBT is a structured collaboration between therapist and client and often calls for homework assignments. CBT has been clinically proven to help clients in a relatively short amount of time.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is appropriate for treatment of alcoholism and other substance use issues, adjustment disorders, depression, anxiety, and other disorders where distorted perceptions or distorted thinking play a role.
Marriage & Family Therapy
Family and marital therapists work with families or couples both together and individually to help them improve their communication skills, build on the positive aspects of their relationships, and repair the harmful or negative aspects.
Who participates in therapy depends upon several factors. The therapist assesses the situation, and based upon the presenting problem and the availability and willingness of the participants, invites members of the family to treatment. When working with more than one person, the therapist will be certain to address confidentiality as it applies to the unit of treatment – meaning that he/she will be sure that all members participating in therapy understand there is a “no secrets” policy in place. If at any point a member cannot attend a session, he or she is kept informed of what has happened in treatment in their absence.
Relational therapy offers strategies to combat marital dysfunction and restore harmony within relationships. Couples recovering from affairs, traumatic events, or dwindling passion can find a helping hand at Alpha Behavioral Counseling Center. To repair discord, our therapists identify the main conflict interfering with the couple’s emotional intimacy and teach the couple skills needed to improve the way they relate to each other. Couples may see a change in their relationship within three to six months.
In psychodynamic therapy, the history of the family and of relationships is examined, and the client is made aware of and processes the connections between past and present emotional and relational issues. The client is able to explore and repair emotional trauma related to attachments and relationships. Depending upon the nature and the history of the problem, this modality can take longer, but can assist in resolving relational issues rooted in the past.
Solution Focused Therapy
This method focuses on the positives and strengths of the persons involved in treatment, and seeks to build on successes and solutions already present. It is usually a short term therapy. Solution focused therapy can help with behavioral issues, relationship problems, drug use, and other issues where clients have become enmeshed in negative and problematic feelings and behavior. Solution focused therapists believe there are always exceptions to the problem behavior or symptom, and in those exceptions lie the beginnings of positive change.
